Are garbage disposals as sustainable as composting?

In urban homes with limited space, composting can be challenging and unpopular. Garbage disposals offer a practical alternative, especially for foods that shouldn’t be composted, like meat, bones, and dairy products. Municipal composting doesn’t recover energy from food waste, whereas many wastewater treatment plants in the U.S. use anaerobic digestion. This process allows garbage disposals to help recover nutrients for fertilizer and carbon for energy, making them a sustainable option for managing food waste.
