How deep should my sump pump pit be?

The typical sump pump pit is 30 inches deep and 18 to 24 inches across. The standard sump pit insert available in home improvement centers is 26 gallons with an 18-inch diameter. In many cases, the pit should be at least 24 inches deep and can go up to 36 inches deep. However, some builders may use a common 5-gallon bucket as a makeshift pit.
